Garmented by God's GRACE: OBSERVATION (Course 1 of 3)

Originally, I intended to title this post: God's Grace Follows me Wherever I Go (and I need it!). My many mess-ups at She Speaks inspired my idea. However, a week ago at breakfast I read Colossians 1 and the Holy Spirit intrigued me when He illuminated verses 1:1-8. Day by day I kept wondering about the truth I read from those verses. These ponderings  led me back and back again to chew on the truth contained within them. My appetite for understanding them drove me to spend time digesting God's word of truth, so I altered my approach. I invite you, my friends, to feast with me on a rich, three-course meal of timeless truth to nourish our souls and garment us with grace.

Course 1: OBSERVATION (This describes the part where we read and re-read God's menu for details.)
Course 2: INTERPRETATION (While we wait for our order, we discuss God's menu selections.)
Course 3: APPLICATION (At last and greatly anticipated, the scrumptious meal of truth to consume!)
Surpise Course (but only if you eat all your dinner!)

...Now, on to the first course...

"1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2To the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse: Grace and peace to you from God our Father.

3We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints— 5the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel 6that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth. 7You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, 8and who also told us of your love in the Spirit."
Colossians 1:1-8

Five key words stand out to me from the above passage: FAITH, LOVE, HOPE, TRUTH, and GRACE. The apostle Paul addresses the Colossians, commending them for their faith and subsequent, follow-up action of clothing themselves in God's amazing love toward other believers in Jesus. You see, they lived lives in a different way because they possessed hope. Eternal promise stored up for them did not come from their earthly activities or ambitions, but from God's gift to mankind. Their hope resulted not from their own invented ideas, but from timeless truth from God's word handed down to them. In fact, this truth (called the gospel of Christ in v. 6) was taught to them by Epaphras, a sold-out-to-Jesus man whom Paul called "a faithful minister of Christ." God's authentic message of grace for them produced a harvest of fruitful actions in those who received His gift of hope.

1) Written by the apostle Paul, according to God's will and call for his life, and he includes Timothy (see v. 1)
2) Written to the believers in Jesus of Colosse--called "holy" and "faithful" (see v. 2)
3) Paul's attitude toward them: gracious, peaceful, thankful, prayerful, & encouraging (see vss. 2-4).
4) Faith in Jesus and Love for God's family members results from our assured, heavenly hope (see v. 5).
5) Believers in Jesus possess future hope HERE and NOW (see vss. 5&6)!
6) We find hope in the gospel of Christ that is called the "word of truth" (see vss. 5&6).
7) This gospel spreads across the globe and further bears fruit and growth in people (see v. 6) NOTE: the progressive tense "ing" that reflects such action continues to happen right now.
8) The gospel of Christ is SIMPLE. It can be understood the moment we hear it (see v. 6).
9) The gospel of Christ presents the message of God's grace and truth (see v. 6).
10) The gospel of Christ passes on by word of mouth. Committed Christ-followers share the good news with others (see vss. 7&8).

Sneak Peak of Course 2: INTERPRETATION Nothing can garment a woman's life like God's GRACE. We can clothe ourselves with responsibilities or fill our time with lunch with friends. Perhaps we choose to array our schedules with various appointments: with clients, playdates, field trips, shopping sprees, or at the spa (aaah!). Regardless of what activities we schedule or which mantles we wear, I am convinced that no fashion is more favorable than the wardrobe of God's grace. A woman who wears Thee MD's (Master Designer) timeless attire fades not out of style. In fact, her royally robed self, face glistening with God's grace, shines His glory for all to see. She sprinkles seeds of faith, love, and truth on others she touches by her different style and her different life, thus making a DIFFERENCE.
