Undignified Mommy Moments

Testing out a frigid Alaskan creek along our hike, July 2008!
I call them undignified Mommy moments. These describe the unexpected displays of a woman still young at heart. Playful. Goofy. Sometimes they take kids by surprise, but no doubt produce roars of laughter. Memory makers. Our children will recall these moments as "campfire stories" to their children. Strangely, they also give our children a sense of safety in the secure love of their sometimes undignified Mommy.

Think about it. Have you ever made funny faces at your baby because it made him giggle? Maybe it was an impersonation, a made-up silly song, or a funky dance move. "Mom can dance?" your stunned child thinks. Now, chances are these "displays" happen only occasionally and behind closed doors. Mommy does not need to make a public spectacle of herself. Nevertheless, I doubt I'm the ONLY Mommy who has ever been undignified.

"a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance," Ecclesiastes 3:4

God's word acknowledges there is a time for everything. Laughing and dancing have their place in our lives just as much as weeping and mourning. Something special happens between mothers and children when Mama can loosen up a bit. Surprising to children, yes, but undignified Mommy moments make them feel connected to a Mama whom isn't bound by rigidity. I believe a "chilled out" Mama opens up her children's hearts. Her unexpected, cool responses make them ready for deeper things, which reflect one of the deepest desires of a Mama who trains her children in the Lord. Really, we are just talking about a fresh approach to teach our children God's infinite truth.

Here are a few of my own undignified Mommy moments that have paved the way to deeper connection with my own kids. Know what? Often I will use these as a segway into a spiritual conversation or Bible study with them. At least I know I've grasped their attention! Try it. Be creative! Share your ideas and undignified Mommy moments with me. I can always use new material!

Race to swing the highest.
Hide and go seek.
Footraces down the street.
Mommy can still hang upside down from a playground trapeze.
Silly songs and groovy dance moves.
Dress up.

Lord, You say there is a time for everything. As moms, it is often difficult to disengage from the "To Do's" to enjoy the times of our days. Help us, Lord. Teach us to let loose a bit. Encourage or hearts with the opportunities for genuine connection with our children through undignified Mommy moments. Your yoke is easy and burden is light. Thank you, Lord Jesus. In your name I pray, Amen.
