Following Suit: But the Queen has Fallen and Hearts have Broken

I won’t pretend as if I’m a stellar card player because I’m not . . . but served here is a tangible lesson for the teachable heart. . .

Following suit. In the game of Hearts, play begins with a low “club” card. All players must follow suit, that is, unless they don’t possess the leading suit in-hand and must discard from a different suit. Exception: the Lord has mercy on the first round of play; a “heart” may not fall OR the formidable Black Maria (i.e. Queen of Spades).

High card wins. Winner takes all. She leads again—but when will the Queen fall?

After Black Maria descends, hearts may fall (i.e. “breaking” hearts). Hearts have broken.

Following suit. We (humans) do this. Not just in cards, but in the “game” of life. We are driven by following something . . . TV shows, cool blogs, cultural icons, weather channel, and the news. We follow Wall Street, sports teams, life dreams—, and everything in-between. Tethered to I- or E-somethings, we so easily follow the card led right before us.

I was struck last week by a card (i.e. door flier) played before me: “Christmas lights? Plan NOW.” It’s September. We haven’t even prepared for Thanksgiving! And frankly, my friends, my heart sank. There are 30 fewer houses to “light up” for Christmas this year in my very own backyard—and we’re just 1:6 counties affected by the recent Texas wildfires!

Following suit. The world tells me I need Christmas lights in September. Now I do love Christmas lights, I do. But we’re not in the first round of cards. I can play a different suit!

The Black Maria has come down. Homes have burned. Hearts have fallen. Many material things—reduced—“discarded.”

I realize I have a choice which card to play next:

Will I follow suit with the world?

Or will I ask God, “What do You want to do in and through my next card move because hearts have broken?” Will I follow God's suit?

And frankly friends, I see hearts broken all around me. Do you? Doesn’t your heart ache and spirit grieve for the people who hurt right now, right around you? Stop and think about which card you will play next. Will you follow God's lead or the world’s suit? And fire didn’t have to visit your neighborhood for hearts to have broken right around you. What card will you play?

God lays His cards down: SEE, HELP, and REMEMBER.

“If you see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help him get it to its feet” (Deuteronomy 22:4).

“The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written: “‘After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, that the remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things’” (Acts 15:15-17).

“Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place” (Revelation 2:5).

As Christ followers, God calls us to SEE and to HELP people—physically and practically. But He also says, “REMEMBER Me!” Remember God--His character, His wonders, His works! We (Christians) possess Living Hope in Christ. As we see people and help them, God wants us to play that next card, “REMEMBER God.” As He leads, follow God’s suit and share your hope in Christ with real people right around you--the queen has fallen and hearts are broken.

God’s lead—Follow suit!

Lord God in heaven, I am humbled by the challenge to follow Your suit. I ask You to tenderize my heart, to open my eyes, to unclog my ears so I will see and hear people’s cries right around me. Please use my hands and my feet to follow Your suit because the Queen has fallen, hearts have broken, and I am free to play a different suit. I echo this prayer for my sisters, too. Lord, help us follow Your suit! In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.
